kitchen experiment: oranges filled with fresh squeezed O.J. jello!

Truth be told, I'm pretty horrible at following instructions. That may have a little to do with the fact that my kitchen experiments don't always turn out like I envision! However, that being said, when I do finally have a win, you better believe I get excited about it.
I had this idea after looking at the back of a recipe on a gelatin packet at home that called for making jello from fruit juice. I then looked at our bag of oranges on the kitchen counter and hatched a plan!
The best part was that it really became an activity for the kids too and they got all excited about squeezing the oranges and mixing the jello. To top it off, in the end, they LOVED their little jello orange halves!
Yay!

Okay, so here is how everything went down:
p.s. the cherries on top were completely unnecessary but I figured, hey, what's the harm?

You'll need:
Lots of oranges (I think we squeezed about 12)
A packet of gelatin
A muffin tin

Okay, so first we squeezed a BUNCH of oranges. And, I'm not going to lie to you, the kids did some orange eating while squeezing which was totally part of it.

Once we had squeezed a bunch of juice (I would say about 4 cups worth) we then followed the directions of the back of gelatin packet which explained how to make jello from fruit juice. Since ours was fresh-squeezed, there was still lots of yummy pulp inside and I didn't filter this out.

We then filled all the orange halves with the gelatin mixed juice and followed the directions for chilling.

TIP:
The muffin tin worked well to hold the halves while chilling so they wouldn't spill once filled with the jello mix. Your packet of gelatin will probably say refrigerate for 4 hours but I inserted the cherries on top of each orange half after 1 hour of chilling.
Serve with a spoon using the jello half like a little bowl!
Fun stuff!
Feel free to email me with questions. I was winging it on this one but we had a great time.

What an appealing treat for summer!

My hubby hollows out lemons and puts sorbet in them sometimes. I love it!
