About two years ago, after my son was first born, I was in desperate need of some T-shirts. So, I found a great sale at Jcrew and some great T-shirt designs and I was one happy camper. But, one of the T-shirts had little beads threaded on it and whenever I wore it around my infant son I was paranoid that they would fall off and he would grab one and put it in his mouth.
So, I tucked the T-shirt away and only wore it on occasion. Over the past couple of years I've returned to (almost) my pre-pregnancy weight and the shirt no longer fits.
But the design was so cool.
What to do?
Well, I turned it into a Beach Towel Bag!
I'm a beginner sewer so, seriously, anyone can do this.

I cut two rectangles out of the T-shirt (one around the design in the front and one from the back).
I then cut two rectangles from some additional striped fabric I had around in my scraps fabric for the lining.
I wanted my bag to be narrow so I cut the rectangles about 11" x 17".

I laid my rectangle with the t-shirt design on top of the striped fabric rectangle and sewed the two together, then repeated for the other set. I hemmed the top of both sets so that would look nice and finished.

Much like making a pillow case, I sewed the two rectangles together , inside out, on all sides except the top. Originally, I was going to use the T-shirt sides for both the front and back (obviously with the design on the front) but then I changed my mind and decided to use the stripe fabric as the back and the plain t-shirt fabric as the inside lining. The next step? Flip the bag right-side out.

Then I cut a thick (about 7") long strip of my "lining" fabric to make a strap. If you fold the strap (on the vertical) in half and tuck in the edges (then iron and pin) you can sew along both long edges to make the strap look clean. For me, personally, I find that to be the easiest method.

Sew the straps onto the inside, side edges of the bag. And there you have it.
Look out beach party, here you come!
