DIY Vintage-y Christmas Ornaments

If you like the look of vintage ornaments, you can easily make your own!
Do you have some glitter?
How about some empty cans you were planning to recycle?
If you have these things nearby your very own vintage-like Christmas ornaments are just a few steps away!

Also, Parenting.com has including my ornaments in a great slide-show with awesome DIY ideas for you and the kids!Featured in this line-up is a vintage-y little number by yours truly!

Materials Needed :

Shallow tin cans (like tuna cans) opened with a safety can opener (so no sharp edges), paper removed and cleaned.
Paint (acrylic and tempera are best with kids, but you can use spray paint as well)
Ribbon (Grosgrain or Satin. Any kind works!)
Things found in nature: Small (approx 2-3 inch) pine cones, sycamore tree gum balls and even sea shells such as starfish
Glitter
White (Elmer's type) glue
Scissors
Christmas Tree ornament hangers (or a paper clip opened in an "S" shape)
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Tiny beads or gems (optional)

How To:
  1. Paint your tin cans and objects of nature in colors of choice. We painted gum balls and pine cones red and white and our tins a mossy green and rustic red. You could also use pastel colors for a very vintage feel. The tins will likely need two coats of paint.
  2. Once the paint has dried, you are ready to glitter! Using white glue (it helps to water it down just a little) paint your natural objects. Sprinkle with glitter and allow to dry. Paint the edge of the rim of the tin can (the part that is open) with glue. Sprinkle a generous amount of glitter onto newspaper and then dip the glued edges of the tin can into the glitter coating well. This will form a gorgeous glittered edge! Allow to dry.
  3. Using the glue gun, you can decorate your pinecones (or leave them just painted and glittered) to look like trees and then glue the natural objects into the inside of the tins. We glued single gum balls into the center of our tins and the pine cones to the bottom.
  4. Tie a ribbon around the tins and into a bow. Secure with some hot glue in various places if you wish. Hook an ornament hook (hanger) in the loop of the bow to hang your ornament
