I hope everyone is having a great Fourth of July weekend! We are grilling in the sunshine and enjoying some Fried Green Tomatoes. Ever wondered how to make this treat?
Here's how I make them:
Ingredients:
green tomatoes
flour
cayenne pepper
an egg
milk
salt and pepper to taste
olive oil

1.
Gather several green tomatoes and slice them into about 1/4 inch thick slices.
2.
Dredge each slice first into an egg milk mixture (I use about 1/4 cup of milk with one egg) then into Flour mixture (mix about 1/2 cup flour with pinch of cayenne pepper*, pink of black pepper and salt to taste). I repeat my dredging several times then pop the tomatoes into the refrigerator for a moment as I am heating about 3/4 of an inch thick of olive oil in a cast iron skillet (a regular frying pan will work too). Heat on medium high.
3.
Once heated (I test with a little crumb of my flour mixture--if it sizzles it's ready) I lay my tomatoes flat and fry for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
4.
Lay on a paper towel or napkin on a plate to cool down. Serve warm and enjoy this tasty treat! *If your kids will be eating this too, you may want to lay low on the cayenne. But we like ours a little on the hot side! Enjoy!

These sound yummy. Happy July 4!
I had these in a restaurant once, and I'm so glad you showed us how to make them! They so good!
Yum on the fried green tomatoes. I've always wanted to try them because I think I will always love a good tomato...in ANY color.
=)

Hmmm... I think I will have no choice but to try, especially since the squirrels keep stealing our tomatoes before they turn orange, then red! Thanks for the idea!
